Report on South Asian Forum International, Indian Chapter and Pakistan Chapter Joint Conference
|
Report on South Asian Forum International, Indian Chapter and Pakistan Chapter Joint Conference It is with great pleasure I would like to report on the successful joint conference of The Indian and Pakistan Chapters of the South Asian Forum was held at the Grand Hotel Dubai. This was indeed a historic event where we see the foundations of unity and the high quality of academic pursuit that the South Asian Forum has been able to bring with in the Asian countries and beyond. Delegates representing Australia, , India, Pakistan, United Kingdom, United States and Middle East took part. It was historic event that saw the the South Asian Forum add a new chapter to the 16 countries that have already joined the family. The Middle East Chapter was born on 17th December 05 Dr Padma Raju Varrey Head of NMC Hospital Abu Dhabi UEA, takes on the Chairmanship of the Middle East Chapter and along with his dedicated team are planning activities to contribute to the family.
The importance of being organized with the joint voice at all international psychiatric Bodies was sought. India currently the 5th largest psychiatric society in the world as per the WPA member status was likely to move to the 3rd / 4th largest with the registration of the current member of psychiatrists now around 5000.
The delegates were addressed by Prof Nambi President Indian Psychiatric Society, Prof. Mallick President of SAARC Psychiatry Forum, & President of Pakistan Psychiatric Association, Dr, Russell D'Souza Vice President South Asian Forum International, Dr Afzal Javed Secretary General South Asian Forum International, Dr. Mohandas Warier Chairman SAF Indian Chapter and President Indian Association of Private Psychiatry and Prof Haron Rashid Chaudrey WPA Zonal rep. Besides the academic program there was a great fellowship with a session on plans for the Future of Asian Psychiatry.
Plans for training for professionals from chapter members will be available at the prestigious Mental Health Centers at India and Pakistan with the South Asian Forum arranging for funding for travel and sundry expenses. It was of Significance to see that the quality of South Asian Psychiatry was of great standandars and that South Asian model of Psychiatry might offer another modality of best psychiatric care for patients. Much of the current developed worlds psychiatric care depended on professional from this region and the term Brain Drain has now been banished with the SAF embracing " Brain Circulation' where developed world psychiatrist can also learn from the experience and methods of this part of the world while contributing to the region.
The Asian Federation Of Psychiatric Association and the WPA Section on Developing countries mental Health were co sponsors.
Mr.. Vivek Seth Vice President and Mr. Pyush Aggarwal General Manager Intas Pharmaceuticals were congratulated and thanked for their commitment not only in hosting this meeting and sponsoring the attendance of all the delegates but in committing to fund further inter chapter Scientific meetings and to sponsor the attendance of a number of Delegates to the Australian Chapter and other international meetings.
